Server Move Checklist

We want this migration to be as easy for you as possible. However there are situations where we may require your cooperation. Below outlines those situations and provides the steps to make the migration a success.

1. DNS Change / IP Address Change

The Migration will require that your domain name point to a new IP address. We will do this for all customers who have DNS with Time Warner Cable. (DNS stands for Domain Name Services. Each account on the internet has an IP address. DNS ensures that when somebody types your website at your-domain.com into a web browser the request goes to the correct server.)

To help facilitate this we will lower the TTL for your domain so that there are no propagation issues. (TTL stands for time to live, and it regulates the amount of time each server on the internet checks for updates to DNS. The lower the number, the more often it checks.) By lowering the TTL, your site will reside on the new account very soon after we do the cutover.

After we make the new account live, we do not immediately remove the old account. We will keep it for one to two weeks in case something was missed. It is important however that as soon as you receive the notification that the migration is complete, you review your site and make sure it is functioning as you wish.

2. Counters

During the migration, we will attempt to migrate your counters. You have access to counters through your control panel.

3. FrontPage

If your site has FrontPage extensions we can usually modify all .htaccess files to reflect the new server location. However, occasionally the extensions will need to be reinstalled. If the site contains child webs, these will become subdirectories within the Root Web upon reinstallation of the extensions. Recreate the subdirectories as child webs.

4. Statistics

You have access to an online statistics package through Urchin to track your web traffic. This can be setup through your control panel.

5. Previewing Your Site

You will receive an e-mail a week before your migration with your new account details. You should pull up the new website to review your content. Contact your local TWC Technical support if you have any problems.
