DNS stands for Domain Name Services. Each account, or domain, on the internet has an IP address which is located on a particular web server. DNS is the service which ensures a request made to your website at your- domain.com goes to the correct server. Some of the propagation issues that you will need to consider are:
Web Access
A new IP address will be assigned at the time of the server move. However, as mentioned above, a redirect from the old IP address to the new IP address will be established. While the domain propagates to the new IP address, access to your web site using the domain name will be redirected to the new location. Until the propagation is completed, visitors will see your site's new IP address in the location bar of their browsers. Your old site will still exist in its original location for five days while the propagation process runs its course.
FTP Access
While the domain propagates to the new IP address, FTP connections to the web site on the new server must be made using the site's new IP address. Attempting to logon to the site with FTP using the domain name will bring you to the site's old location and will result in updates that are not seen by your site's visitors.
FrontPage Users
While the domain propagates to the new IP address, it will be necessary to use the new IP address to access the site with FrontPage rather than using the domain name. Attempting to log on to the site with FrontPage using the domain name will bring you to the site's old location and will result in updates not being seen by visitors.
