Directory
Web Passwords
for UNIX Accounts
You can assign unique
userIDs and passwords to control user access to various web directories.
You can see this in action when you access your own Control Panel: when you try
to access Control Panel, you are prompted for your userID and password. Note
that the actual web pages are not password-protected. Rather, the directory
containing those pages is password-protected.
This document shows you how to password protect directories so that only those
users with the proper permissions can access the web pages in those directories.
Example:
A software developer is making several programs available for downloading.
However, only those visitors who have paid for the service should be allowed
access to the download page. To control access, the page is placed in a
directory that is password-protected. Instead of distributing a single password,
unique userIDs and passwords are assigned and removed as needed.
Non-FrontPage
Users
- Using
your web authoring software, create the directory that you want to password
protect.
- Go
to your account's Control Panel by typing either your domain name or your IP
address into your web browser's Address text box as follows:
www.<domain_name>/stats/
(For example, www.wishbonevertigo.com/stats/)
or...
<IP_address>/stats/
(For example, 123.123.123.123/stats/)
Be sure to substitute your
actual domain name or IP address accordingly. Then, press Enter. A
password dialog box will be displayed.
- In
the password dialog box, enter your account's username and password. Then,
click OK. Your Control Panel will be displayed.
- In
Control Panel, click Web Passwords.
- Enter
the name of the directory that you created in Step 1 and click Load.
The first time you use the
Web Passwords function, the page will reload and an Add/Modify
user for directory: option will display near the bottom of the page. Add
users as necessary. If you have already added users, the Remove user for
directory: option will also be displayed. As you maintain the List of
users, the userIDs will be updated and displayed.
After adding a user through the Web Passwords feature, you can
run a simple test to see if the directory is actually password-protected. To
test whether access to the directory is now password-protected, create a new
HTML document or copy an existing one into the directory. Then, use a web
browser to go to that page. If a password is required, your have successfully
implemented the Web Passwords feature.

Important ***
-
For
FrontPage-based web sites, use only the features available through
the FrontPage Permissions dialog box to password protect your
directories. Do not use the Web Passwords option in your web
hosting accounts Control Panel. Using that option may corrupt your
FrontPage sites extensions.
-
Do
not password protect any system directories such as "stats" or
"cgi-local". Our password access control feature CANNOT be used
to create additional FTP userIDs and passwords.
